In the study ââ¬Å"Preliminary Randomized Trial of Function- Based Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy to Treat Obsessive Compulsive Behavior in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorderâ⬠by the Focus on Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities journal, groups of eight to twelve-year-old children with high functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder are assessed. All of these children, in addition to the diagnosis of autism, exhibit the challenging behavior of obsessive compulsions, also known as OCB. Although none of the children have an Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder diagnosis, they exhibit many of the behaviors, and it often interferes with learning. There is little research about effective intervention strategies for OCB. In this study, in a preliminary trial, function-based cognitive-behavior therapy (Fb-CBT) consisting of psychoeducation and mapping, cognitive-behavioral skills training, exposure, and response prevention, as well as function-based behavioral assessment, is used to comb at the challenging behaviors of OCB. The results of the study indicated that the challenging behaviors decreased with these intervention strategies. A functional behavior assessment involves determining why a student is exhibiting challenging behaviors. A function-based approach would draw information from several sources to develop this hypothesis.
